We're fundraising for Childhood Dementia
In April 2027, my son Archie and I will be walking 100 kms of the Camino de Santiago in Spain to raise funds and awareness for the Childhood Dementia Initiative.
This challenge is deeply personal. We're walking in honour of my beautiful niece and nephew, Isla and Jude (Archie's much-loved cousins), who are living with Sanfilippo syndrome – a rare genetic condition that causes childhood dementia.
When I turned 40, I celebrated by running a half marathon in their honour. As I approach my 50th birthday, it feels fitting to take on another challenge with an even greater purpose. And I'm delighted to have my 18-year-old son join me!
Most people don't realise that dementia affects children. Yet around 1 in every 2,900 children is born with a condition that causes childhood dementia.
These children gradually lose the skills many of us take for granted – the ability to walk, talk, eat, play, learn and eventually recognise the people they love. There is currently no cure.
Despite the devastating impact, childhood dementia research is heartbreakingly underfunded. Government funding is around 20 times lower than childhood cancer research, despite a similar death rate. It also receives far less research and clinical trial investment than many other devastating diseases.
Every dollar raised helps Childhood Dementia Initiative advocate for greater awareness, accelerate vital research and bring hope to families facing the unimaginable.
