Help me fundraise for the Childhood Dementia Initiative...
A Journey of Determination: Supporting the Childhood Dementia Initiative
Because Every Step Counts
Imagine embarking on a journey that tests your physical endurance, emotional resolve, and deepest sense of purpose. That’s the path I’ve chosen to walk this year, and I hope you’ll join me—not by scaling mountains or running races, but by generously supporting a cause that’s close to my heart: the Childhood Dementia Initiative.
Let me tell you about my friend Meg, who stands as the driving force behind this vital charity. Meg’s story is one of resilience and unyielding determination. As the founder of the Childhood Dementia Initiative, her mission is to improve research, policy, care and support for children with dementia, and their families. This isn’t just a professional endeavour for Meg—it's deeply personal. Her children, Isla and Jude, were diagnosed at a young age with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a devastating form of childhood dementia. Despite the challenges, Meg has never wavered in her commitment to creating a brighter future for children like Isla and Jude, who have just celebrated their 16th and 14th birthdays respectively.
Inspired by Meg’s strength, I have committed to walking the legendary Inca Trail with her in October this year. Together, we aim to raise both awareness and much-needed funds for the Childhood Dementia Initiative. This isn’t just a trek—it’s a testament to the courage of families affected by childhood dementia and a call to action for those of us who can make a difference.
But my journey doesn’t end there. This year, I’ve set myself three additional challenges to push my limits and rally support for this cause:
Challenge 1: The Cape-to-Cape Walk
This weekend, I’ll begin a seven-day trek covering 132km from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia. This scenic yet gruelling route has already demanded months of preparation, involving long-distance walks that have introduced me to some unwelcome companions—leeches and ticks to name a couple. As unpleasant as they are, they’re nothing compared to the struggles that children like Isla and Jude face every day. This walk is my way of honouring their strength.
Challenge 2: Sydney HYROX Event
On Saturday, July 5th, I’ll be competing in the Sydney HYROX event—a competitive fitness challenge designed for those in their prime physical years (think 25, not 52!). Some of those “young people” tricked me into this event before I realised exactly what I was up for. And let’s just say I’m terrified. But if Meg can battle every obstacle to secure a better future for children with dementia, then surely I can face the HYROX event with determination—however daunting it may seem.
Challenge 3: Running with Sophie
On Sunday, August 31st, I’ll lace up my sneakers for a 10km race alongside my talented 15-year-old niece Sophie. Truth be told, I haven’t run a competitive 10km since before COVID, but how could I resist when Sophie asked me to join her? (Don’t think I won’t be trying my very best to beat her either!) It’s not just a race though—it’s a celebration of connection, vitality, and the support that families offer one another, no matter the circumstances.
How You Can Help
These challenges are no small feats, but every step, every stride, and every kilometre pales in comparison to the impact we can collectively make for children living with dementia. Your contribution, big or small, can bring hope to families like Meg’s and fund critical research that changes lives.
Donating isn’t just a gesture—it’s a commitment to a future where no child’s potential is limited by this terrible disease. Let’s make every effort count. Together, we can transform pain into progress and courage into cures.
Thank you for supporting this journey and thank you for believing in a world where childhood dementia no longer steals joy, dreams, and futures. Let’s walk this path together.
My Updates

Things are getting serious...
Wednesday 25th Jun
Ok, things are getting serious now. I’m now just over one week away from Challenge 2: Sydney HYROX, and this I fear, will be the hardest of all. Not to mention that between events, I happened to have turned 53, and yet this is what I’m about to attempt (in one session):
The HYROX event is 8 stations, and in between EVERY station, you HAVE TO RUN 1km, not jog, RUN, these are the stations:
· 1000 metres on the ski erg (machine that simulates a ski action)
· Push 104kg a total of 200 metres
· Pull 78kg a total of 200 metres
· 100 metres of burpees, proper burpees – chest to floor and up again
· 1000 metres on the rowing machine
· 200 metres of squats carrying 10kg of weight on shoulders
· 200 metres of farmers carry with 16kg weight for each arm
· 100 wall balls (throwing a 4kg ball up to a height of around xx)
Did I mention that in between each of these stations, you have to RUN 1km??!!!
I should admit, I am doing this event with a partner, we must do all the running together, but we can share the other stations. Me and my partner basically do half-half. It’s still A LOT. With zero rest. We’ve done two run throughs, our fastest time was 1 hour 21 minutes, which is ok, but we’d like to do better.
Anyway, the point of this sad story is that what I’d really love to help me get through this on Sunday 6th July is the prospect of my amazing friends and family donating money to this cause that I care so deeply about. Whilst I’m busting my guts to train for this, there are families that are experiencing unimaginable difficulties navigating life for kids with dementia. In fact, 1 in every 2,900 babies are born with a condition that causes childhood dementia. Most die before their 18th birthdays. Which is shocking, but more so because there are no cures and the conditions are severely under researched.
So many of you have already been so generous, and for you, this is just an update. But if you haven’t had a chance yet and you’d like to sponsor me, I’d be supremely grateful. I’ve set myself a goal of raising $6,000, and I’m over two-thirds of the way there.
The collective difference we can make means the world to so many families.
